Overview of the Searcy Special School DistrictFrom 1888-1933 Searcy was the home of the largest women-only college in the southwest, Galloway College for Women. The college was known for its educational and social standards with most of the state's well-known families sending their daughters. Harding University is located on the former Galloway campus and is the largest private university in Arkansas. The school's academic atmosphere and many public entertainment and informational programs have greatly enhanced Searcy's cultural life. Today, Harding University has over 5,300 students enrolled from all 50 states and 40 foreign countries. The university also maintains a private K-12 academy for younger students. Searcy's public school system (K-12) is accredited by the North Central Association of Schools and Colleges. Roughly, 126 teachers have masters degrees. Scholarship offers to Searcy students have numbered more than one million dollars. The schools' extracurricular activities and sports programs are numerous and competitive in quality to towns twice Searcy's size. Realtors in Searcy say the excellence of Searcy's public school system has been one of the major motivators in the steady growth of the town over the last ten years.
