College Preparation Curriculum

Graduation Requirements:

Requirements for a general diploma in 2000-2001 are:

  • 4 credits of English
  • 3 credits of Math
  • 3 credits of Science
    (must include one credit of Physical Science and one credit of Life Science)
  • 3 credits of Social Studies
  • American History
  • World History
  • American Government/Civics
  • 1/2 credit of Physical Education
  • 1/2 credit of Health
  • 1/2 credit of Fine Art
    (art, drama, choir and band)
  • 1/2 credit of Oral Communications
  • 7 elective credits
  • College Preparatory Diploma

    To qualify for a College Preparatory Diploma, a student must complete the minimum precollege core requirements set by the Arkansas Department of Education. Currently these are as follows:

    • 4 credits of English (cannot be remedial)
    • 3 credits of Social Studies
      • Civics or American Government
      • American History
      • World History
    • 3 credits of Natural Science
      • Biology
      • Physical Science
      • Chemistry
      • Physics
      • Principles of Tech I & II
    • 3 credits of Math
      • Algebra, or Algebra I-A & I-B
      • Geometry
      • Algebra II, or Algebra II-A & II-B
    • 2 credits of the same foreign language.
    • 1/2 credit of physical education
    • 1/2 credit of health
    • 1/2 credit of a fine art (art, drama, choir, and band included in fine arts)
    • 1/2 credit of oral communications
    • 5 elective credits

    Currently there is no minimum GPA requirement from the Arkansas Department of Education. Students must also fulfill all general diploma requirements. Courses taken for College Preparatory Diploma must be taken from an accredited school. To qualify for College Preparatory or College Preparatory "Plus" Diploma all courses must be taken from a stated accredited school.

  • College Preparatory "Plus" Diploma

    To qualify fro a College Preparatory "Plus" Diploma, a student must have completed the following criteria:

    • 4 credits of English - 3 credits must be honors or advanced placement.
    • 2 credits of the same foreign language.
    • 3 credits of Math in grades 9 - 12
      ( must complete Geometry and Algebra II or Alegbra II A & B as a minimum of the 3 required credits)
      • Algebra
      • Algebra II
      • Advanced Algebra
      • Geometry
      • Pre-Calculus
      • Calculus AP
    • 3 credits of Natural Science 1 credit of Physical Science 1 credit of Biological Science 1 credit of Chemistry or Physics
    • 3 credits of Social Studies
      • Civics or American Government
      • American History
      • World History

    Students have a minimum of 6 Honors/AP courses (1 credit may be from 9th grade).

    • 1/2 credit of physical education
    • 1/2 credit of health
    • 1/2 credit of fine art (art, drama, choir, and band)
    • 1/2 credit of oral communications
    • 5 elective credits
    • Minimum College Prep GPA must be a 2.75

    "A" students must have a "College Prep" GPA of 2.50 to receive College Preparatory "plus" Diploma.

Advanced Placement Courses:

A.P. courses are offered to 11th and 12th grade students seeking college credit while still in high school. These courses are weighted as follows:

  • A = 5.0
  • B = 4.0
  • C = 3.0
  • D = 2.0
  • F = 0

Non - AP Courses
  • A = 4.0
  • B = 3.0
  • C = 2.0
  • D = 1.0
  • F = 0

To earn college credit, students must take a national standardized test that is usually given in early May. College admissions offices will determine the amount of college credit given based on the score reported. There is a separate fee for each A.P. test.

Honors courses:

  1. Honor graduates will be determined at the end of 7 semesters and status verified at end of 8 semesters.
    *students will loose Honor Graduate status if they do not meet requirements at end of 8 semesters. Students may also be added to the Honor Graduate status by attaining all requirements at the end of 8 semesters.
  2. Three Honors/AP credits must have been earned prior to the senior year.
  3. By the end of the senior year, students must have completed a minimum of 8 Honors/AP credits (a required minimum of 4 credits to be AP, one (1) 9th grade Honors credit will be counted with the remaining seven (7) to be Honors/AP courses taken in grades 10 - 12
  4. No fractional Honors/AP credits will be accepted.
  5. Must have Honors or AP English in the 10th, 11th, and 12th grades.
  6. Students who have met all the requirements for college Preparatory "Plus" Curriculum and earn a "College Prep" GPA of 3.50 (GPA based on college-prep core courses only) will be considered an Honor Graduate. (If the number of honor graduates does not equal 10% of the senior class, then the "College Prep" GPA requirement will be lowered to include the top 10% of the senior class according to "College Prep" GPA Rank in Class).
  7. Honor graduates must not have any F's, NC's or I's on official transcript in any course, including noncollege prep courses. "NC" will be figured into GPA as an "F".
  8. A student must be enrolled a minimum of four semesters in Searcy Schools grades 9-12 to be eligible for valedictorian or salutation status. To be selected as an Honor Graduate, other than Valedictorian or Salutatorian, a student must be enrolled and in full-time attendance during his/her senior year.
  9. Both principal and counselor must grant approval for a grant approval for a grade earned through concurrent college enrollment to be calculated in the College Prep GPA.

Graduates:

1996 - 1997: 66% of the graduates made plans to continue their education after graduation.
1997 - 1998: 67% of the graduates made plans to continue their education after graduation.
1998 - 1999: 72% of the graduates made plans to continue their education after graduation.
1999 - 2000: 80% of the graduates made plans to continue their education after graduation.

    • 5 Distinguished Governors Scholarships
    • 1 Army Scholarship
    • 2 Navy Scholarships

  • 1998 - 1999: $1,089,584 in scholarships
    • 1 National Merit Finalist
    • 6 Distinguished Governors Scholarship
    • 1 Army ROTC Nursing Scholars

  • 1999 - 2000: $1,534,106 in scholarships
    • 3 National Merit Finalist
    • 7 Distinguished Governors Scholarships
    • 1 ROTC Air Force
    • 1 U.S. Gov't Internship
