Services

Services that retirees might have an interest in are health care, transportation, and continuing education.

TRANSPORTATION

Access to and availability of transportation services are important to retirees. Interstate 67/167 offers access to many major cities. In addition to 67/167 there are also many U.S. and state highways that offer good access.

Searcy Municipal Airport can accommodate aircraft up to the GII classification. There is a 6,000 ft. lighted runway and an instrument approach to the airport. A manned intercom system is active during the business day. Jet fuel is available 24 hours a day and tie-downs are provided free at the Searcy Airport. An average of 50 planes use the Searcy Airport daily. The Little Rock National Airport is 50 miles south of Searcy. A four-lane divided highway connects the two cities. Bus service is available in Searcy by Greyhound Lines. Searcy has local taxi service and rental-car agencies. Rail service for goods into and out of Searcy is provided by the shortline Doniphan, Kensett, and Searcy railroads and the mainline Union Pacific Railroad. The city is served by 13 truck lines. More information about Searcy's transportation infrastructure and services is available in the business section of our web pages.

Health Care

Older Americans become more concerned with health care at retirement than at any other time of their life. Visits to the doctor become more frequent, and short hospital stays are likely.

Searcy's very location was determined by health reasons. Since the mineral springs that were located in Spring Park brought health-conscious visitors to Searcy in the 19th century, the medical community of Searcy has thrived. The town's medical services has remained a magnet for people from throughout the surrounding area of Arkansas. The over 100 physicians, in family practice and virtually every medical specialty, that practice in and around Searcy are committed to the care of patients from a large region of north central and northeastern Arkansas.

After many Arkansas towns lost their hometown hospitals, Searcy still has two, highly competitive, state-of-the-art hospitals: Central Arkansas Hospital and White County Medical Center. With the addition of CARTI-North, Central Arkansas Radiation therapy facility, two independent living facilities and three nursing homes, Searcy has medical facilities for almost any medical necessity. The town has become a major medical referral center for this part of the state.

Searcy's numerous physicians, healthcare workers, dentists and eye care professionals are a thriving part of the Searcy economy and workforce. Searcy began as a mecca for those pursuing good health. It continues its tradition for progressive health care.

Searcy has two regional hospitals with a combined bed capacity over 400 beds. More than 100 physicians serve the two hospitals and 18 clinics in Searcy. The town serves as a regional medical center for north central and north east Arkansas. A wide range of medical and surgical services are available in Searcy, including special services such as:

  • open heart surgery

Vocational/Technical Education

For many retirees, retirement would be an empty time if there were not opportunities for learning new things. Arkansas is one of 36 states that have passed laws or established policies that waive or reduce fees for academic credit for senior adults on a space-available basis at state supported institutions. Arkansas residents who are 60 years of age or older are entitled to attend college credit classes at state colleges and universities without tuition charge.

In the Searcy area, retiree's have a variety of educational opportunities that they may pursue. We have the nationally recognized Harding University, and we also have Arkansas State University-Beebe which is just a short 15 minute drive away as well as Foothills Technical School located here in Searcy.
