September 14: Kohler Co. announced Monday that it is closing its stainless steel sink manufacturing plant at Searcy because of decreasing customer demand for stainless steel sinks during the prolonged recession. The company is consolidating production at the company's newer plant at Reynosa, Mexico. The closure will put 57 employees out of a job. The last day of work for the majority of employees will be Nov. 25, with some employees working through December as the company ramps down operations for a year-end closure. Kohler took ownership of the Searcy production facility in December 1986, following the acquisition of Polar Stainless Products Inc. The plant, originally constructed in 1965, has undergone several expansions with the latest occurring in 1995. Once the Searcy plant is closed, Kohler intends to sell the 200,000-SF facility and property. |
