As residents of White County, we have an opportunity in September to vote on a 1 percent tax that will sunset after 21 months. This tax will provide the county and cities with funding for roadway improvements while producing the local portion of matching funds shared between Searcy and White County. The Arkansas Highway & Transportation Department will provide 54 million dollars for a total of 60 m...illion dollars to be used for the Highway 13 Extension Project, commonly referred to as the “Bypass”. The Highway 13 Extension Project will create a loop through White County, bypassing city traffic in Searcy, beginning at the McRae overpass and looping north to intersect Highway 36 and will continue to connect to the exit 48 overpass at Judsonia. The south route of the bypass is already determined, and the north route will fall within the area shaded in blue. Many arteries and connecting roads will have direct access to the bypass, relieving congestion and providing efficient routes to Highway 67/167, while providing easy access to the downtown areas of Searcy. The main arteries to downtown Searcy include North Main Street, Davis Drive, Highway 267, Highway 36, and Highway 16. The funding needed to improve the North Main and Davis Drive arteries will be carried by the City of Searcy. Highway 267, Highway 36 and Highway 16 connectors will continue to be maintained by the state. In addition to the opportunity to receive the 54 million dollars of appropriated funds from the Arkansas Highway & Transportation Department, is the opportunity to generate funding needed to improve many of the other city streets and road systems in each of the 16 cities and other rural communities of White County.
